Taking Their Place in the Pantheon: Ted Rhodes, John Shippen, Bill Spiller and Joe Louis Barrow Sr

The PGA to Grant Posthumous Memberships to Black Golf Legends

In November Rhodes, Shippen, Spiller and the Brown Bomber will finally get PGA membership status. The PGA Board of Directors put its full weight and mandate behind an effort to grant these Black golf greats of yesteryear entry into the fold. A unanimous vote by the Board earlier this summer sealed the deal. At this year’s 93rd PGA Annual Meeting in New Orleans a family member of each of these statesmen for diversity on the links will participate in the posthumous celebration. The PGA’s motivation is unequivocal: "The PGA of America believes these men, but for the color of their skin, would have been PGA members who play the game, teach the game and promote the game," said PGA of America President Jim Remy. "The PGA of America recognizes the importance of honoring these gentlemen with their rightful place in golf history.

The Green Magazine offers our most joyous congrats to the families of Rhodes, Shippen, Spiller, and Louis. And kudos to the PGA for taking such a courageous step.

It's certainly a long overdue

It's certainly a long overdue tribute to gentlemen of the golf game that have set the bar for under par... I too applaud the PGA for making this happen for all the families involved. These gentlemen of color are truly "Black in the Game" and deserve every accolade received.

God Bless America

What a wonderful honor for

What a wonderful honor for these men who paved the way for me to play the world's best courses. For those of us who love the game, stand up and aplaud these men of great courage, passion and skill.

I salute these men on behalf ot the members of Black in the Game Golf. Their stories were the motivation behind the Black in the Game Golf. I wanted to create a conduit for men and women of color to continue to enjoy the game of golf to it's fullest!

Thanks of sharing this wonderful news...

Rhodes, Shippen, Spiller, and Louis

If not for the growth of the game in the multicultural community, Tiger Woods, and the efforts of the PGA of America's increasingly aware leadership, these names would continue to be overshadowed for their contribution to the game of golf. Yet, without Pete McDaniels tome entitled "Uneven Lies" about all of these men and more....there would be no recognition of them at all. A tip of the cap to McDaniels!
