Eye On The Demise

In the scope of ethical journalism, there is such a thing as being "too close to a story". CBS Sports anchor, James Brown, continues to wear his intentions on his sleeve. His 60 Minutes cross examination of the once-caged Atlanta Falcon now freed Philadelphia Eagle, Michael Vick, followed the trend of his previous interview with Adam "Pac-Man" Jones. Looking at both interviews, especially with Vick, Brown tries to mentor them in front of the camera making a face-to-face dialogue into one best suited for a heart-to-heart on a the front porch. As journalists, we are not there to befriend our subjects. It is our job to get, dare I say, "just the facts".

If you got nothing else from these laboring 15-minutes of television, it's that everyone is wondering what's wrong with Michael Vick. Why is this young man with "God-given potential" on the field throwing it all away with his debauchery off the field? Playing the concerned parties in the interview, turned intervention, are Wayne Pacelle, President of The Humane Society of the United States, and former NFL Head Coach Tony Dungy. Along with Brown, Pacelle and Dungy spoke of Vick in the third person as if he was not in the room. Vick's rolling eyes and muted sighs were seen as his character was dissected within this dialogue. Painful to imagine and even more painful to watch-believe me.

This isn't Nuremburg and Vick is far from Ivan The Terrible. This is more like Salem. Vick is the sacrificial witch on display as the heretics point and clamor for his fiery downfall. On the other hand, Cleveland Browns' wide receiver Dante Stallworth is on house arrest for DUI Manslaughter. HOUSE ARREST? If you want to take it further, the photogenic shoulders at Abu Ghraib only got 18 months for torturing captives. These were people affected by the negligent and malicious actions of these individual and Vick has to file for bankruptcy and spend two years in Leavenworth for dogs?

Vick Still in The Doghouse

All of the protesting about Michael Vick is nothing more than PETA pushinG its PR agenda, and once again, perpetuating the disdain, by certain factions, for a man of color making a living (particularly that large of a living). MV was, at one time, one of the highest paid pro footballers. Nearly two years for dogfighting??? In Leavenworth Federal Prison??? Please...

And still suspended by Roger Goddell, as of today's date? May have to sit out some games? Please... 18 months and bankruptcy isn't enough? I hear you Baltimore 81

"What about the dogs?" Please...what about art in the schools, after school math and science tutoring programs, jobs, alternative outlets for youth, adequate housing for the poor, and on and on...

The HUMAN-e Society program that Vick will be a part of should, however, prove to be beneficial...Dogfighting is abhorrent and should be stopped. Let's see what impact Vick & The HUMAN-e society will have on squashing the spread of this. Perhaps the HUMAN-E Society should create afterschool programs where youth can learn to train dogs and create career opportunities as Vets, Vet's Assistants, start their own businesses as trainers for dogs that help the blind, dogs that work in disaster-relief, sniff out drugs. Teach the youth how to create their own community-based foundations themselves to raise money to exponentially create the same kind of programs for other youth. Change the perception of what a Pit Bull or a Rottweiler in an urban community can stand for....

Would PETA and HUMAN-e society contribute funds to these kind of programs?? Can old dogs be taught new tricks?
